What is the weather like in Aracena?

In winter, log fires, afternoon teas, central heating and cosy rooms will make you feel at home.

In early spring the valley below the house is filled with white heather and primroses . In late April the nightingales can be heard and you might see wild paeonies alongside the solomon’s seal and the euphorbias which grow under the chestnut trees in the bottom of the valley.

May marks the start to a succession of local fiestas, Romerias and Ferias which carry through until the early autumn. (see events calendar.) Summer weather is hot and dry, with cool nights. As we dine late on the terrace it’s advisable to have a shawl or cardigan.

What activties are near your B&B?

We can organise riding, canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, and hiking through third parties, but please give us plenty of notice. It is useful to speak Spanish as most of our activities organisers have a limited knowledge of English. Botanical and nature walks are also possible with an English speaking guide.

The oldest (1917) and strangest golf course in spain is to be found at Rio Tinto mines, 30 minutes away. You play off perfect greens, but need a doormat for the fairway which is made of rolled rubble. The clubhouse is a small wooden hut, and there are 9 holes.

Sierra de Aracena - a beautiful nature reserve of hills, thickly-wooded with sweet chestnut and cork oak; small groves of olives or walnuts; orchards of apples, plums, peaches, figs and pears and lovely lakes. In other words, it's idyllic. The wild rocky escarpments are covered in cistus and heather and stone-walled mule tracks make meandering from village to hamlet a delight. There is a wonderful variety of wildlife and the house itself has a stunning hill-top location overlooking the green and blue hills of the Sierra Morena.

What interesting places are near you?

Aracena has the famous Grutas de las Maravillas caves, an undergound wonderland of stalactites and lakes, beautifully illuminated. You can also visit the Cabildo Viejo where there is an exhibition on the nature reserve (Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche) in which we live. Linares and Alajar are two particularily pretty rustic white pueblos, nestling at the foot of the mountains.
Almonaster la Real has a 9th Century Mosque which can be visited.

The Peña de Arias Montano sits atop a volcanic plug, with stunning views out over the southern part of Huelva province. Here there is a restaurant, and a small chapel where Ntra Sra. La Reina de los Angeles, a famous miracle working image of the Virgin Mary is housed.

For those interested in industrial archeology, Rio Tinto mines are only 30 minutes away. It’s worth taking the tour to La Peña del Hierro to see the intriguing scarlet water which the town and river take their names from. The British held sway here for almost a century, and you can visit the mine administrator’s quarter where one of the houses is preserved as a museum. Owing to a property dispute, the presbyterian chapel is falling into decay, sadly, no longer used for concerts which it was a few years ago. Children will enjoy the walk through a replica of a Roman mine. Rio Tinto has been mined for over two thousand years. Here you will also find the oldest (1917) and strangest golf course in Spain. You play off perfect greens, but need a doormat for the rubble fairway. The clubhouse is a wooden hut.

Seville , only an hour away by car is perhaps the most romantic city in Spain. Wander through the Barrio Santa Cruz, visit the Reales Alcazares mudejar style palace with its elaborate carved ceilings, fountain courtyards and exquisite gardens.

There are many castles dotted about the hills between Aracena and Portugal.
